Regular Character Discussion & Session Update

Every session will now begin with a discussion about your characters and the story we are all telling. Below is an small excerpt of the discussion we are going to have. It's not homework, but I welcome email if you'd like to send them. Otherwise if you can find the time to ponder on some of it please do so. I plan on having the same discussion for a few sessions.

First and foremost D&D is a role playing game with a variety of mechanical means to tell a story. It is intended we tell this story together. This is our story not my personal story as the DM. I give it structure, rules, and populate it with characters but it is our story to tell collectively. So I'd like to encourage my players to find/tell your characters piece of the story for our mutual satisfactions.

Questions about your individual Player Characters:

  • Give us a physical description of your character whenever we are beginning a new session!
  • What do other people see when they look at you? What does your character want people to see?
  • What is a totally satisfying hero scenario for your character? Like a crowning achievement?
  • What are your short/long term goals for your character? What are they working towards?
  • What kind of adventures are you most interested in Adult themed? Exploration? Horror? Dungeon Crawls? Political? Scooby doo? Something else?
  • What are your character’s pain points or sensitivities?
  • What are your character's fears and phobias? :D
  • What is your family status and relationships or desires for them? Looking for wuv in all da wong pwaces?
  • Want additional appearance Feature? (I have a table for that)
  • Want character mannerisms? (I have a table for that)
  • Want additional Bonds? (I have a table for that)
  • Roll for hotness? (I have a table for that)

New Inspiration Mechanic moving forward:

Inspiration gives you the ability to roll two D20 dice and take the better for anything but a damage roll. I am not very good at remembering to give out inspiration. So I would like to try a new mechanic where you can gain inspiration through story telling about your character at any short or long rest. You may tell a story about the characters background, motivations, or desires to gain inspiration. Your party members may ask questions or comment and the storyteller can reward the best question or comment by assigning the next turn to story tell at the next rest. You can not have more then 1 inspiration at a time. Inspiration can not be carried over to the next session so use it if you get it. I will still award inspiration for exceptional moments. This new mechanic is just another way for you to get it.
